Passion for Restorative Practice

Let me introduce you to Guillermo Yan Alfonso…

During our recent session with our ACECEN Learning Leaders, we were privileged to have Guillermo lead a number of sessions with us. Guillermo  is a facilitator’s coordinator with Colegios Cristianos Reformados (COCREF) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. A significant piece in the work that he does with COCREF is training principals and teachers of 16 Christian schools in the implementation of a Biblical worldview into all of the educational programming.

So what was Guillermo doing in Nicaragua, you ask? Good question…

A key piece to our learning during the week was understanding the term “restorative practice.” Restorative practices are rooted in restorative justice. They emphasize repairing the harm done to people and relationships, rather than punishing people. By building more supportive learning environments and focusing on social-emotional learning, restorative practices can reduce social barriers to learning.

While Diane outlined the understanding with practical implications of what restorative practice is, Guillermo moved us into what is happening with COCREF and how restorative could be used within the ACECEN Learning Community. Significant to this presentation was the need to live the restorative practice in one’s own life. Restorative practice, in other words, is a way of being.
