Welcome to Burkina Faso!

Blog Archives:

This blog was written by Learning Leader Gabriella Hoogstra who is working alongside co-leader Elco Vandergrift with Burkina Faso educators and leaders as part of the Living and Leading the Biblical Story in Christian Education Walking Together project.

With gratitude for your prayers and safe travels, Elco and I have arrived in Burkina Faso!  After a long and restful sleep last night (I am so grateful!), we were invited by our friend Sylvain to attend his church the Eglise Protestante Evangelique here in Ouagadougou. Sylvain is the National Coordinator for AESEB/ACSI and our partner here in Burkina Faso.

Sylvain's church is a church deeply commited to living for Christ. This morning we witnessed adult baptism, child dedication, and five people commit their lives to Jesus for the first time! See that blue basin in the photo of the church courtyard? That’s where the new church members were baptized. The church itself was packed to capacity - men on one side, women on the other, children upstairs in Sunday School. The congregation had to bring out more benches for all the people to have a place to sit.

The singing was beautiful - some melodies were familiar, “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus” - for example, and the congregation sang in French and even distinctive Burkinabe dialects. And the dancing! There were visitors from a sister church and they demonstrated a new dance for the church in Ouagadougou. They were joking with the church “they would dance for the glory of Jesus!”

It was a beautiful worship service and testimony to the joy this church holds, their focus on hospitality made us feel warmly welcomed and truly brothers and sisters of a global church.

Thanks for letting us know about your safe arrival Gabriella!

I could feel the enthusiasm and the joy of our brothers and sisters in the Lord with your telling of this morning’s baptisms and dancing!

Truly, the Joy of the Lord is our strength ❤️
