Walking Together - Round Table - Day 2

Blog Archives:

The second day of the 'Walking Together Round Table,' hosted by EduDeo Ministries, provided key Canadian and international Christian educators with an opportunity to interact and respond to the previous day's exciting field reports.

Alberta-based literacy expert Tena Siebenga-Valstar opened the morning session in prayer, directing participants to the call of discipleship and servanthood in the classroom.  Tena cited Gloria Stronks and Doug Blomberg's seminal work on Christian education, 'A Vision with a Task: Christian Schooling for Responsive Discipleship': "Disciples of Jesus Christ follow him in obedience. They acknowledge and trust Christ's trailblazing, using his power and directives to nurture the potential in themselves, in others, and in the rest of God's creation."

Following opening devotions, participants divided into small groups to discuss some of the challenges, blessings and opportunities of cross-cultural teacher training.

Small groups gathered together for a plenary session to summarize their impressions, responses and suggestions to EduDeo's various global education projects.  The discussion was marked by a high degree of cultural sensitivity, unity around the foundational importance of Biblical worldview and desire to reach children in the majority world with the Gospel of Christ.

Following lunch, Derek Schuurman, Associate Professor of Computer Science at Redeemer University College and British Columbia-based educational consultant Harold Klassen, Director of Transforming Teachers and Teach Beyond, provided a primer on the challenges and benefits of technology in the developing world classroom.

The day concluded with a discussion on teacher mentorship and the implications of sending Canadian Christian educators to assist and disciple teachers in the developing world.

Dr. Benjamin Hegeman closed the day with an inspirational prayer calling for a blessing on the global kingdom work of Christian education, participants rising to sing a doxology of praise.

It is encouraging to see the Lord using Christian educators and Christian schools in so many areas of the world. He is using our variety of talents and means to spread his message around the globe. Thank you for being there and sharing.
