An International Valentine

Ever feel lonely on Valentine's Day?

This Canadian Christian school decided to put a new twist on the day of love that gave it an international feel and renewed purpose!

On February 14, 2012, Stratford & District Christian School held a bake sale titling it "Heart for Dominican."  They began this even event by having a kick-off the day before, with an assembly.

A letter from them tells the rest of the story:

To help raise awareness of what EduDeo is and its ministry, our guest speakers (and former SDCS colleagues) Kim and Conroy Shelhaas, (who helped build Batey Fao) gave a fantastic presentation.  THe assembly began with a kick off with the EduDeo promo video, followed by a powerpoint slide showing the "other side" of the Dominican.  This was done for our students to be aware of the poverty and the limited resources available for quality Christian education in the Dominican.

Following the assembly, students were challenged to fill out a cut-out paper heart with a prayer.  They were held accountable to pray for EduDeo Ministries and everyone involved (both administration and teaching staff and students).  These "heart-felt prayers" were displayed on a wall, along with a photo album that contained pictures of Batey Fao and the Dominican.  I have included a few prayer hearts that can be posted in your office (see photos).

Students showed a generous response to the bake sale. This fundraising event, along with funds received from parents at Christmas, raised a total of $956.46!  Praise be to God!  We pray that this monetary gift will be used to further God's kingdom and that needs will be met.

Thank you again for the excellent communication, the plenty of resources you have generously provided and the support that you have given through this.

We certainly hope to continue our partnership support and give towards EduDeo in future years.

They ended their meaningful letter with a beautiful passage of Scripture:

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Four of the hearts that the students wrote prayers on were sent to our office (photos above).  Some read, "Lord God, please help the people in the Dominican Republic to get enough reading books so they can learn to read and write."  Another, "I am going to pray for the families and for the kids to be able to go to school."  Still another, "Protect them and give them a Hope and a Future.  In Jesus' name, Amen."
